Just a Normal Day

Note from the writer: It's been a year to the day of this tragic event and sadly as predicted no new gun laws have been passed to keep assault weapons out of the hands of those who could do harm. The media and political forces of our nation have gone on with life as they know and report it. Statistics for Victims of gun violence continue to climb as many more families are hit with the painful task of burying their loved ones. There have been more mass shootings with fatalities since the Newtown,Ct. tragedy in fact one just yesterday at another school in Colorado. The community and the families of Newtown have asked that the media not come and make a spectacle of their grief. Let's hope this request will be honored. It's the least we can do. The Writer- L.M.

It was just a normal day I was sitting at my job looking out the big picture windows.

I happened to notice parents walking their small children to school.

From the looks and smiles on their faces I imagined them talking about the excitement of the coming holidays and looking forward to the end of the school week.

There was a father and son sharing smiles and chatting, mothers and daughters laughing while other small children ran ahead down the side walk.

Some parents were pushing their smallest of children in strollers.

It was just a picturesque scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting

That’s when it sunk in. I thought to myself that it was a day just like any other ordinary day for the school children and their parents in the small town of Connecticut.

They may have been happily looking forward to the holidays or talking about what the afternoon activities would be after school.

No one would have suspected that for 20 families it would be the last treasured moments they would get to spend with one another.

A kiss and a hug goodbye and a see you later never knowing that later would mean the most tragic and crushing moment of your lives.

Twenty families 26 in all received the most devastating news no parent or child wants to hear.

A nation sat and watched in agony and hoped that the news would not bring what everyone feared.

Parents of the students in the school rushed with panic and fear for their children.

I cannot nor do I ever want to know what that feeling must have been like for those parents.

My heart breaks to even try.

Unfortunately we all received the horrible news of 26 killed with 20 of the innocent slain being that of small children.

The gunman a 20yr old man with a mental illness took his life as police moved in.

How could this happen? Why did this happen?

We may never know the answer.

People have labeled the 20yr old as a monster for nothing short could have done something this evil.

It’s the only way to make sense of the destruction of what on happened that day.

School is supposed to be a sanctuary a place for higher learning but what we learn from this tragedy is nothing in today’s world has such the honor.

These children who were mere babies in our eyes were slain in the most unthinkable way.

Teachers and administrators who are considered heroes in the classroom died trying to protect their students, their kids.

Sadly they could not for the 20yr old intruder came prepared and armed for the mission he set himself to do.

There will be out cries for gun control from those against guns and from those who oppose any law that they feel threatens their second amendment rights of the Constitution. www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/second_amendment

The news media will cover this sad story as they have done before.

They will demonstrate empathy and concern but eventually they will go on to the next story just as they have done before.

Politicians will proclaim something must be done with loud spoken voices clinched fist in all. Those for and against any laws that might bring about change will shout their forms of rhetoric from their pulpits.

A lot of noise will be generated but little will be done as they too will become still in their actions.

Politics are guided by a higher power the almighty dollar.

It’s just a clever disguise to cater to the organizations/business that stands to profit the most. America will not lose our guns and our option to shoot, kill or maim anyone who trusts passes against us (or who doesn’t).

Nothing will be done. Life (and death no matter how horrible) will go on in these United States of America.

It's sad but true; you see the proof is in the pudding as they say.

The children and the adults lost in this massacre will be forever remembered and memorialized by their families, friends and the community of Newtown, Ct.

A community of people, families and friends who before that day were unknown to the world are now forever linked with the ugliness of this unthinkable horror. We have unfortunately had this sort of tragedy happened far too many times in today’s society.

The waves of extended victims as a result of this tragic event have suffered a horrible rip in the fabric of their lives.
It is a rip that cannot be repaired only mended with time.

The parents, the children and all who have been touched in this small town will need lots and lots of time. They will need time to recover but I'm not sure about healing.
I'm not sure how anyone heals from the lost of a child or any loved one for that matter.

The trickle of parents and their children slowly trail off outside the window their smiles and faces etched in my mind.

I only wished the reason I noticed these faces were not because of the heartbreak and loss that the families and people of Newtown, Ct. are going through now.
